I own a number of different smart plug outlets. When they first hit the market they were pretty large, outlet hogs. I was fine with that because, hey, they contain the technology to let me turn on and off a lamp or coffee pot from anywhere in the world!

So, you can imagine my surprise when I discovered the Teckin Smart Plug Wifi Outlet was on sale for $16 for a twin pack! And even its regular price usually comes in at under $20.

It wasn’t just the price that appealed to me, it was the ability to finally claim back an outlet that was being covered by my existing husky-sized TP-Link outlet. Take a look at the size difference!

Aside from the size, the Teckin smart outlet is also “hub free.” That means you don’t have to invest in another piece of hardware and software in order to connect it to the internet. You just download the Smart Life app for your Android or iOS device and you can then control it directly. It also looks like you can control a multitude of other smart devices!

 

Other great features with the app include the ability to set up scheduling. Perfect for lamps!

And you can also see just how much energy the device connected to the outlet is using. That’s a feature that you don’t normally see with the lower priced smart outlets.

 

Another thing to like about this smart outlet is that connects to both Amazon Alexa and Google Home, meaning you will never actually need to open up the Smart Life app in order to switch it on.

Is there a downside?

Not anything significant that comes to mind. However, having not heard of Teckin before, I remain cautious about two things. One, how long will this smart outlet be around and updated? Second, I made sure not to use my main email address or a password that I use on other devices–just in case the security is not high enough to prevent it being hacked.

Aside from those minor concerns, the Teckin Smart Plug Wifi Outlet is highly recommended!

You can now buy an even smaller Teckin Smart Plug that is also even cheaper! The only downside, it doesn’t have the energy usage report.
